Bavaria Filmstadt is the visitor area of the Bavaria Film Studios in Geiselgasteig, right on Munich’s city boundary in the municipality of Grünwald. On a guided tour of around 90 minutes you see original film sets, studio halls and workshops, followed by a film in the 4D cinema. The combined ticket costs 24 euros for adults and 21 euros for children aged 6 to 17 (as of October 2026, source: filmstadt.de).
In autumn 2027 we are opening a boarding house with 54 apartments at Ländstraße 6 in Lehel. From there, it takes about 45 minutes to reach the Filmstadt by U-Bahn and tram 25. This guide covers prices, how the tour works, getting there and parking, plus our honest assessment of who the trip is worthwhile for.

Bavaria Film Studios Munich: location in Geiselgasteig
The Bavaria Film Studios are in Geiselgasteig, part of the municipality of Grünwald in the district of Munich. They are only a few hundred metres from the Munich district of Harlaching, and tram 25 stops right outside the site. According to Munich’s tourist office, films have been shot here for more than 100 years, and the site covers around 300,000 square metres.
The Bavaria Studios are a working production site. According to muenchen.travel, shows and series such as “1, 2 oder 3”, “Die Rosenheim-Cops” and “Sturm der Liebe” are made here, along with productions for streaming services. That is why you will not see every hall, and which areas are open depends on the shooting schedule.
Central accommodation in Munich makes a better base than a hotel in Grünwald, because the old town, museums and the Isar are then on your doorstep for the rest of your stay. The Filmstadt itself fills half a day.
Bavaria Filmstadt tour: what to expect, duration and film sets
According to filmstadt.de, the tour lasts around 90 minutes. A guide takes the group around the site and explains how sets are built, scenes are lit and films are edited in post-production. According to Munich’s tourist office, the route also takes in the workshops, post-production and the costume and furniture store.
In the off-season, tours start at least once an hour. You do not need to book a fixed time slot for the standard combined ticket. If you would like a tour in English or with a particular focus, you can book a VIP tour about a week in advance; there is also a free English audio guide.

Bavaria Filmstadt sets: which films were shot here?
The sets you see change over time. In October 2026, the Filmstadt’s tour page lists these stops, among others:
- Das Boot: the original set of the U-boat U96, which you can walk through
- Das Kanu des Manitu: an original cave set
- Fack ju Göhte: the classroom from the films
- Die Rosenheim-Cops: the police office and an interview room
- Jim Button and Luke the Engine Driver: a film set
- The Magic Flute: a room from Sarastro’s palace
- Stowaway: a walk-in space station modelled on the ISS
According to muenchen.travel, “The NeverEnding Story” was also filmed in Munich, so many visitors ask about Falkor the luckdragon. He is not listed on the current tour page, so if he is the reason for your trip, ask before you go.
Acting on the Rosenheim-Cops tour and in the classroom
Visitors get to step in front of the camera several times. According to filmstadt.de, there are short scenes in the Rosenheim-Cops office, in the “Fack ju Göhte” classroom and in the visual effects studio. You can then buy the short films in the Filmstadt shop or online.
From Lehel to the Filmstadt and back into town for the evening
Our boarding house at Ländstraße 6 is one U-Bahn stop from Max-Weber-Platz, where tram 25 departs towards Grünwald. The 54 apartments have their own kitchen, fast Wi-Fi and 24-hour check-in with a key safe, and the family apartments have room for parents and children. We open in autumn 2027, and you will find all the details about our holiday apartments in Munich on our homepage.
Bavaria Filmstadt tickets: prices and discounts
According to the price list, Bavaria Filmstadt prices are valid until 6 January 2027. The tour and 4D cinema are only available together as the Filmstadt Kombi (combined ticket):
| Ticket | Adults | Children and teenagers (6–17) |
|---|---|---|
| Filmstadt Kombi (tour + 4D cinema) | €24.00 | €21.00 |
| Kombi, concession | €23.00 | €20.00 |
| School classes (15 people or more, booking required) | – | €17.50 |
| HOLOGATE virtual reality, 1 game | €9.00 | €9.00 |
The price list does not include a family ticket, and no price is given for children under six. In that case, ask at the ticket desk. According to the price list, the Filmstadt does not offer a ticket without the guided tour.
Cheaper entry: discounts and birthdays
Reduced prices apply to seniors aged 60 and over, people with severe disabilities and guests with a valid MVV single day ticket, in each case only at the ticket desk on the day. If it is your birthday, you get in free on the day with ID. Groups of 20 or more paying visitors receive a discount if they book in advance.
According to Munich’s tourist office, the München Card gets you a discount, and entry is included with the München City Pass. According to filmstadt.de, discount codes and vouchers from third-party providers cannot be combined with other reductions.
Online ticket or ticket desk?
You can buy your ticket online at filmstadt.de or at the ticket desk on the day. If you want to use a discount, go to the desk, as most reductions only apply there. Group tours and VIP tours, on the other hand, must be booked in advance.
4D cinema and virtual reality
The combined ticket includes a film in the 4D cinema. According to muenchen.travel, the animated film “Moglis Dschungel Abenteuer” (Mowgli’s Jungle Adventure) is currently showing. Expect a short film rather than a feature-length one.
According to filmstadt.de, only people between 1.20 and 2.00 metres tall may enter the 4D cinema. The Filmstadt advises against it if you are pregnant, have heart, back or neck problems or are prone to motion sickness. For an extra charge, there is also the HOLOGATE arena with virtual reality games.
Bavaria Filmstadt opening times and how long you need
The Filmstadt does not publish fixed opening times for the whole year. Opening days are shown in an annual calendar on filmstadt.de, and the 2027 calendar is already online. As a guide, the family portal kindaling gives 10 am to 5 pm Monday to Friday and 9 am to 6 pm at weekends, though this varies by season.
How long do you need for the Bavaria Filmstadt? The Filmstadt recommends about two hours for the tour and 4D cinema. Including the journey from the city centre, waiting for the next tour and a coffee in the shop, we allow half a day.
For food, the Filmstadt shop in the entrance area sells baked goods and hot drinks, and on selected days a food truck parks outside the entrance at lunchtime. The Filmstadt’s information page does not mention a restaurant, so it is best to have lunch in town before or afterwards.
Bavaria Filmstadt with children: age, birthday parties and Halloween
The Bavaria Filmstadt is most rewarding for children from about six years old. That is when the child price applies, and children can follow what the guide explains. For the 4D cinema, what counts is a minimum height of 1.20 metres, not age.

Younger children tend to get bored on a 90-minute tour. There are better places for them in the city, such as playgrounds, hands-on museums or the zoo. You will find an overview in our guide to Munich with kids.
Children’s birthday parties at Bavaria Filmstadt
For children’s birthday parties, the Filmstadt offers several packages from school year one upwards, ranging from a tour with a quiz to a four-hour film workshop. Bookings must be made at least 14 days in advance using a form on filmstadt.de; the workshop needs around six weeks’ notice. Prices are valid until 10 January 2027.
Bavaria Filmstadt at Halloween
In autumn the Filmstadt holds a family Halloween event, in 2026 on Saturday 24 October from 10 am to 3 pm for 5 euros per person. The website menu also lists a “Spooky Tour”, but there were no further details in October 2026. Dates for 2027 have yet to be announced.
Getting to Bavaria Filmstadt: public transport from Lehel and parking
Getting there by public transport is easy. From Lehel U-Bahn station, take the U4 or U5 one stop to Max-Weber-Platz. Tram 25 to Grünwald departs from there, running via Rosenheimer Platz, Ostfriedhof, Wettersteinplatz and Harlaching to the Bavariafilmplatz stop.

We reckon on around half an hour for the tram, plus about ten minutes on foot. According to filmstadt.de, from the stop you walk around 200 metres towards the main entrance of Bavaria Film, turn left at the sign “Bavaria Filmstadt: Eingang, Parkplatz, Kasse” (entrance, car park, tickets) and follow the green fence for about 700 metres. The path is paved and step-free. We have put together tips on an accessible holiday apartment and questions to ask the host in a separate guide.
In autumn 2026, a rail replacement service ran on line 25 because of engineering works. Check the MVG journey planner before you travel so you do not have to change unnecessarily.
Parking at Bavaria Filmstadt
If you are coming by car, enter “Bavariafilmstraße” in 82031 Geiselgasteig into your sat nav, at the junction with Lil-Dagover-Ring. According to filmstadt.de, parking costs 6 euros for your entire visit. Vehicles over 3.60 metres high, such as coaches, cannot use Grünwalder Straße from the city because of an underpass and should take the A995, exit Oberhaching.
Visiting Bavaria Filmstadt with a dog
Dogs on a lead may join the tour, but not the 4D cinema. According to filmstadt.de, there are water bowls and a dog waste bag dispenser in the entrance area, and every dog gets a small treat at the ticket desk. If you are travelling to Munich with your dog, take a look at our dog-friendly apartments in Munich; we can tell you on request which categories allow dogs.
Combining it with Hellabrunn Zoo
Both attractions are in the south of Munich by the Isar: the Filmstadt on the high bank in Geiselgasteig and Hellabrunn Zoo in Thalkirchen. There is no direct bus or tram connection between the two, so you will need to change. Check the route beforehand in the MVG app.
With children, we recommend spreading the two over two days. The zoo opens at 9 am and fills a whole day on its own, the Filmstadt half a day. If you do want to combine them, start at the zoo in the morning and head to the Filmstadt in the early afternoon, as the last tours can finish early depending on the season.
Is Bavaria Filmstadt worth it? Our honest assessment
If you know German films and TV series, the tour will give you plenty of “aha” moments. Walking through the U-boat or shooting a scene in the classroom is fun for children and adults alike. The trip also works on rainy days, as much of it takes place indoors. For a second rainy day, Therme Erding north-east of the city is well worth a visit.
There is criticism too. In reviews on kindaling, visitors complain about the price, older studios, large groups and the fast pace of the tour. Some find the 4D cinema short. If you are expecting a theme park with rides, this is not the place for you.
Our verdict for guests: worthwhile for families with children aged six and over and for film fans, less so for couples with only two days in the city. If you are staying longer and looking for more places to visit in the surrounding area, our guide to day trips from Munich covers lakes, mountains and castles.
Hotels near Bavaria Filmstadt or a central base?
Many people look for hotels near the Bavaria Filmstadt. There are only a few places to stay in Grünwald and Harlaching, and there is little going on in the evenings. For a city break, you are better off staying in the city centre and taking the tram out for half a day.
It is a different story for people working at the studios. If you are in Munich for several weeks for a production, you need a kitchen, a washing machine and some peace and quiet after long shooting days. For that, furnished apartments in Munich are often more practical than a hotel room.
From Lehel you can reach the studios without a car in around 45 minutes, and Lehel U-Bahn station is a few minutes’ walk from our building. How rental periods, prices and registration work for longer stays is explained on our page about temporary housing in Munich.
Conclusion
In 90 minutes, the Bavaria Filmstadt shows you real film sets from “Das Boot” to “Fack ju Göhte”, costs 24 euros with the combined ticket and is easy to reach on tram 25. Families with children aged six and over get the most out of it. From autumn 2027 you can stay in our aparthotel in Munich in Lehel, one U-Bahn stop from where the tram starts.
