Oktoberfest in Munich: beer tents and Ferris wheel on the Theresienwiese in the early evening

Oktoberfest 2027: Dates, Tips and How to Get to the Wiesn

By Daniel Schulz, residir GmbH · Last updated: 13 October 2026

Oktoberfest 2027 takes place from 18 September to 3 October 2027 on the Theresienwiese in Munich. It is the 192nd Wiesn (as locals call the festival), lasts 16 days and opens on Saturday at noon with the ceremonial tapping of the first keg in the Schottenhamel tent. Entry to the festival grounds and the tents is free; only the Oide Wiesn charges admission.

In autumn 2027 we are opening a boarding house with 54 apartments at Ländstraße 6 in Lehel, and our first Wiesn falls almost exactly in our launch phase. That is why we are already getting questions about Munich’s Oktoberfest: when does it start, how do you get there, is it worth booking a table? Here are our answers, with sources and honest advice – because the Wiesn is crowded and expensive. If you are looking for a holiday apartment in Munich for the festival, enquire early.

When is Oktoberfest 2027? Dates and duration of the Wiesn

The 2027 Wiesn begins on Saturday 18 September and ends on Sunday 3 October 2027. The city publishes the dates for Oktoberfest Munich 2027 on its portal muenchen.de. They follow the fixed rule: Oktoberfest starts on the Saturday after 15 September and ends on the first Sunday in October. If that Sunday falls on 1 or 2 October, the festival is extended to German Unity Day (3 October).

So how long does Oktoberfest last? In 2027 it runs for 16 days, and 3 October is also the final Sunday. For comparison, Oktoberfest 2026 ran from 19 September to 4 October. If you are already planning ahead after the 2026 Wiesn, you can pencil in the 2027 dates with confidence.

Wiesn opening hours

According to muenchen.de, the large tents serve beer until 10:30 pm and close at 11:30 pm. The Käfer Wiesn-Schänke and Kufflers Weinzelt stay open longer, serving until 12:30 am. Rides and stalls open at noon on the opening day, at 10 am on weekdays and at 9 am at weekends (as of October 2026).

On the day of the keg tapping, the festival tents open as early as 9 am, but beer is only served after 12 noon. If you want to get into a large tent on that Saturday, you will often be queuing from the morning. The city publishes the exact opening hours for each day on its Wiesn page.

A table seats up to ten people. On weekdays, small groups can often still find space during the day.

Oktoberfest tents, table bookings and beer prices

There are 14 large festival tents on the Theresienwiese, 13 of which serve beer, plus Kufflers Weinzelt (wine tent). Well-known names include the Hofbräu-Festzelt, the Augustiner-Festhalle, the Ochsenbraterei, the Fischer-Vroni and the Schottenhamel. There are also many small Wiesn tents, which are often cosier and less noisy.

How do you book a table?

You can only book a table at the Wiesn directly with the landlord of the tent in question, usually online. The booking itself is free, but you buy food and drink vouchers with it, often for two Maß of beer and half a roast chicken per person. A table seats up to ten, and individual seats are not allocated.

According to muenchen.de, the booking offices usually open in spring, with the tents announcing the dates themselves. Good evening and weekend slots go quickly. Do not buy reservations through agencies or classified ads: resale is not permitted, and transfers are only possible via the official Oktoberfest Booking portal.

You can also go without a reservation. The tents are open to everyone unless they are closed due to overcrowding. On weekdays and before 3 pm small groups usually find a seat, and in good weather there is also room in the beer gardens outside the tents.

Prices at Oktoberfest: beer, food and rides

At Oktoberfest 2026 a Maß of beer cost between 14.80 and 15.90 euros, 15.61 euros on average (as of October 2026, according to muenchen.de). The city only announces the 2027 beer prices in early summer; in 2026 this was on 2 June. Experience suggests you should expect a slight increase.

Oktoberfest food – half a roast chicken, a pork knuckle or a fish roll – costs considerably more than in town. For two Maß, a meal and two rides, we estimate roughly 60 to 80 euros per person. This is our estimate, not an official figure.

Stay in an apartment in Lehel for the Wiesn

Our 54 apartments on Ländstraße are a four-minute walk from the Isartor, with their own kitchen, fast Wi-Fi and 24-hour safe check-in for late returns. The U4 or U5 takes you straight to the Theresienwiese without changing. We open in autumn 2027 and are already taking enquiries for the Oktoberfest weeks.

Getting to the Theresienwiese from Lehel

Driving to the Wiesn in Munich is not worth it: there is no visitor parking right at the Theresienwiese, and many streets around the festival grounds are closed. The city recommends the U-Bahn, S-Bahn, tram or going on foot.

By U-Bahn: U4 and U5

From Lehel U-Bahn station, the U4 and U5 run westbound directly to Theresienwiese station. It is four stops via Odeonsplatz, Karlsplatz (Stachus) and the central station, and the journey takes about ten minutes (estimate, as of October 2026). Lehel station is just a few minutes’ walk from our building.

On peak days Theresienwiese station gets extremely busy, and if it is overcrowded the MVG (Munich’s transport operator) may temporarily close platforms. For getting to Oktoberfest, the MVG therefore also lists alternative stops: Goetheplatz and Poccistraße on the U3/U6, Schwanthalerhöhe on the U4/U5 and Hackerbrücke S-Bahn station. Hackerbrücke is easy to reach from Lehel: four minutes on foot to the Isartor, then the S-Bahn along the central trunk line without changing.

On foot from the Old Town

In good weather we like to walk: from Lehel via the Isartor, the Tal and Marienplatz to Sendlinger Tor and on to the Theresienwiese. The roughly 3.5 kilometres take about 45 minutes (estimate). On the way back in the evening, walking is often more relaxed than a crowded platform.

Almost all visitors walk the last stretch to the Theresienwiese, even those arriving by U-Bahn, S-Bahn or tram.

If you are combining the Wiesn with a city break, our plan for a Munich weekend has ideas for the days before and after your festival visit. The Old Town is packed during the Wiesn, but the museums are often quieter than usual in the mornings.

The Wiesn with children: family days and rules

According to muenchen.de, the family days at Oktoberfest 2027 are Tuesday 21 and Tuesday 28 September. Until 7 pm on those days, many rides and stalls offer reduced prices. On weekdays it is much quieter in the early afternoon than on Saturdays. The Bavaria school holidays 2027 already end on 13 September, so the Wiesn falls entirely in term time.

Children under six are not allowed in the festival tents after 8 pm, even when accompanied by adults. On busy days access with pushchairs may be restricted; the current rules are on the official Wiesn website. With small children we recommend the mornings and the family days.

On family days many rides are cheaper until 7 pm. Weekday afternoons are noticeably quieter.

If you are travelling with the whole family, an aparthotel in Munich with a kitchen is often more flexible than a hotel room, especially when the little ones need an early night.

Oide Wiesn, keg tapping and costume parade

The Oide Wiesn (“old Wiesn”) is in the southern part of the Theresienwiese and recalls the Oktoberfest of days gone by: historic rides, brass bands and its own tents. It charges admission and, according to muenchen.de, is open daily from 10 am to 11:30 pm. Many locals prefer it because it is quieter.

The Wiesn keg tapping is on 18 September 2027 at 12 noon: the Lord Mayor taps the first barrel in the Schottenhamel. Before that, the Wiesn landlords arrive in a procession of horse-drawn carriages. The big costume and riflemen’s parade traditionally takes place on the first Wiesn Sunday, so in 2027 probably on 19 September. The city had not yet confirmed this date when we researched this article.

Honest tips for your Wiesn visit

Crowded, loud, expensive: when a visit is worth it

The Wiesn is at its busiest on Saturdays, the first weekend and German Unity Day. Some tents then close as early as midday because they are full. If you want to do more than queue, come on a weekday before 2 pm. A Maß costs almost the same everywhere, so comparing prices between tents is hardly worth it.

Security and bags

There are security checks at the entrances, and large bags and rucksacks are not allowed. According to muenchen.de, bags may hold no more than three litres and measure no more than 20 × 15 × 10 centimetres (as of October 2026). The rules may change, so please check the official website before your visit. It is best to leave luggage at your accommodation. What applies to private rentals during the Wiesn is covered in our guide to Airbnb in Munich.

Dogs are not allowed on the festival grounds. If you are travelling to Munich with a dog, you will need someone to look after it during your Wiesn hours; for pet-friendly accommodation, see our page on dog-friendly apartments in Munich.

Oktoberfest outfit: traditional dress is not compulsory

You will see dirndls and lederhosen everywhere, but they are not compulsory. Comfortable shoes and a jacket for the evening matter more, as it gets chilly after sunset at the end of September. As for the dirndl bow: tied on the left means single, on the right means taken.

Book your accommodation early

During the Wiesn, accommodation prices rise sharply across the city, and hotels near the Theresienwiese are often booked up a year in advance. In 2027 there is also EXPO REAL from 4 to 6 October, immediately after the last day of the festival. All dates are listed in our calendar of Messe Munich 2027 trade fair dates.

If you are combining the Wiesn with a trade fair or travelling on business, you will find our apartments for business travellers on the page about accommodation for Messe Munich. For the Wiesn weeks, it is better to enquire in spring than in August.

If you would rather celebrate in spring, take a look at the Munich Spring Festival on the Theresienwiese: smaller, cheaper and less crowded.

Conclusion

Oktoberfest 2027 runs from 18 September to 3 October, and if you plan your table, travel and accommodation early, you will enjoy the Wiesn far more; you will find central apartments with a direct U-Bahn link to the Theresienwiese on our page about accommodation in Munich.
